Winter Village Art

Here’s an art project perfect for anytime this winter! Make a winter village for your classroom out of foam core and hot glue. I’d recommend for Grade 6+. There are five house patterns in the set. Decide how big you want this project to be and create one per student or as many as you want!

Supplies

  • 1/4” foam core*
  • Hot glue gun
  • Craft razor
  • Cutting mat or other surface that won’t damage
  • Battery tea light
  • Mod Podge or Elmer’s Glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Metal or plastic ruler
  • Pencil
  • Winter Village patterns

*Note on the foam core- Foam core is found at the dollar store in 24”x36” sheets. Make sure both sides are dull.

Patterns

Makes at least 5 or 1 whole village

Age 12 and up

How To Make…

Print the patterns and cut them out. Use a razor to cut the windows. One piece at a time, lay the pattern on the foam core and mark the corners or trace the edge.

Use the ruler to make a straight edge from corner to corner. Slide the razor along the ruler’s edge. Cut a couple times to get the whole way through.

Tip

Place the ruler to the inside of the pattern. This way if the razor slips, the piece isn’t ruined.

For the windows, lay the pattern on and mark the corners. Cut out carefully. For round windows, trace the bottom of a glue stick to get them perfectly round.

Trace the tea light on the floor piece and cut a hole for it. Press into the floor until the bottom is flat and hot glue in place.

Hot glue everything together. Side walls get set between the front and the back walls. Glue them together first. Then glue down to the floor. Finally add the roof pieces. Fill the gap on the ridge with hot glue.

Finish with the glitter! Coat the roof and roof edges with Mod Podge or Elmer’s glue. Cover the roof with lots of glitter, letting any extra spill off. Make sure every glued area is coated and shake off any excess. Let dry.

Tip

Set the house on a large piece of paper to do the glitter. When you’re done, lift the corners of the paper to gather up the excess glitter and carefully pour it back into the container. Voila! Minimal mess.

After drying, turn on the lights and set up your village!
