And His Name Shall Be Called

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21 KJV)

There are around 200 names and titles for Jesus in the Bible. He’s called the Saviour, the Messiah, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Lamb of God, the Lion and many, many more.  They tell us about Jesus’ role and His character. We’re going to look at some of them.

Matthew 1:20-23

This passage is where the angel of the Lord comes to Joseph. He tells him that Mary is going to have a baby and Joseph is supposed to name Him Jesus. The end of verse 21 explains exactly why the name Jesus. “For he shall save his people from their sins.” Jesus means “The Lord saves.” Jesus was sent to earth to be our Saviour. He came to die on the cross and rise again so that our sins could be forgiven.

Verse 23 gives us a second name for Jesus. It’s Emmanuel. Emmanuel means “God with us.” This name tells us that Jesus is the Son of God.

John 3:16

This verse says again that Jesus is God’s son. The word begotten here means “One and Only”. God sent His one and only Son to die and save us from our sin.

In Luke 2 the angels appear to the shepherds and tell them that a baby has been born who is “a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Christ is the same word as Messiah. This means “The anointed One.”

Now if we go to Isaiah 9:6 there’s a few more names to describe who Jesus is.

Isaiah 9:6-7

“His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” And the next verse explains how He will have an eternal reign and He will establish justice and judgement.

So how is Jesus each of these things?

He is Wonderful. Jesus performed many miracles. He healed sick children, blind men, and many, many other things. One incredible story of how Wonderful Jesus is-

Mark 4:36-39

Jesus literally ended the storm with three words! He really is Wonderful.

He is Counsellor. Counsellor means He gives advice. In the following story He gives advice to a rich young man. And that man walked away from Jesus sad because he didn’t want to follow Jesus’ advice.

Matthew 19:16-22

He is the Mighty God. This is proven because He has the ability to forgive sins.

Matthew 9:2-6

He is the Everlasting Father. Jesus and the Father are one.

John 27:21-23

He is the Prince of Peace. He brings us peace in the midst of trouble.

John 14: 27, 16:33

Jesus is all this and much more! That wonderful baby God sent is our incredible Saviour.
